Blackrock College is the oldest of the Spiritan schools in Ireland, having opened in 1860. The college has almost 1,000 pupils and over 85 teachers. The full secondary cycle education programme is available to all boys. Students sit both Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations as well as having the option to take the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme. Transition year is taken by all boys. A weekly reporting system forms part of the support given to students and parents through their education. A community of over 20 members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit is based at the school. The school’s catholic ethos is supported by a Religious Education and a Pastoral Department.

Students are actively encouraged to take part in some of the many sports available within the school. A wide choice is available from rugby and soccer through to various water sports, as well as a large and popular cycling club. Participation in music and drama is also encouraged. The school has a choir and also stages a musical production each year.

Outreach work undertaken by students includes active involvement with the St Vincent de Paul Society, a St. Patrick’s Day Badge Project in aid of the developing world and a post-Leaving Certificate trip to a project in a developing country.
